Cavin Richie and Wildlife in Bronze

Cavin Richie's main interest is natural history and his designs reflect this passion. The originals for Cavin's lost wax castings were first carved in shed elk antler or wooly mammoth ivory. Cavin has been carving in these mediums for the last 30 years. His best carvings are selected for the bronze line.

"THE PHOTOGRAPH ABOVED DEPICTS THE PROCESS I USE TO CREATE A BRONZE CASTING. The image is drawn on paper, cut out and used as a template for the carving. I carve the prototype in shed elk antler or wooly mammoth ivory with as much detail as possible. One piece can take up to 20 hours to carve. When I have completed the carving it is molded using a silicon rubber compound. Hot wax is poured into the mold creating the lost wax method. The rough casting is chased, the findings are sholdered on and a patina is applied using the same technique as in large bronze sculptures. I love the earthy look of bronze and the way it shows the detail of my original carving. Each piece of jewelry is a miniature sculpture that can be worn." Cavin
