How Franz Porcelain is Made
Franz Porcelain is created using a blend of time-honored artisan's techniques, personal artistic vision and cutting-edge technology. Each piece begins life on paper as a sketch influenced by the power, vitality and beauty of nature; then, old and new - as well as East and West - meet as current software is used to refine the design and begin its journey to brilliant three-dimensional art.
Franz Porcelain artists use the finest Chinese clay and under-glazing techniques developed centuries ago, along with new, eco-friendly coloring methods and up-to-date low-emission kilns heated by natural gas in a modern state-of-the-art facility located in Jingdezhen, China. Decades of experience are required to understand and successfully employ the combination of mixing, firing, casting and coloring techniques used by Franz, including specialized skills such as the company's own unique take on undercut molding.
Every piece of Franz Porcelain is FDA approved food safe for use as tableware. Due to the intricate design of the porcelain, however, use in a microwave or a dishwasher is not recommended.
How Franz Jewelry is Made
The centuries-old traditional crafts of porcelain sculpture and intricate metalworking come together to produce the unique, sophisticated and handcrafted pieces of the Franz Jewelry Collection. The same sense of tradition and painstaking attention to detail that produce Franz Porcelain go into creating Franz Jewelry, and many of the pieces depict the same passion for nature's beauty that imbues Franz Porcelain tableware with its evocative look.
Dedicated sculptors carefully carve a wax model of finished jewelry designs, using it to create a silicon mold in which the actual piece will be cast. Cast pieces are trimmed and polished before a coating of gorgeous rhodium is applied to create a lustrous shine and protect the piece against oxidation. Discovered in 1803 as a component of uranium ore, rhodium is an inert precious metal more costly than gold.
Once the piece is cast and coated, porcelain inlays and other finish details are hand-laid to ensure exactitude and stunning detail in every item of Franz Jewelry.
